Day 3

Today we spent the entire day traveling on Route 50.  It was rural highway most of the way, with a few small towns mixed in.  The heat seems overly oppressive today out here.  There was one town in Illinois and a sign on the bank said 103°.  It felt every bit of that.  We covered about 340 miles today.  A little less than we had hoped to.
We stopped for for lunch in Salem Illinois and ate at a small place called the M&M Courtyard Café, owned by Mike and Maureen.  I had chicken salad on a croissant that was outstanding.  It was here James discovered he had an issue with muffler.  The weld between the exhaust pipe and the muffler gave out. So after dinner we went to Lowes, got a hose clamp and he took care of it in the parking lot of the hotel . Just like MacGyver.
We stopped in St. Louis just long enough to get our picture taken at the base of the arch.  If you have never seen it up close, it is impressive.  After the photo op, we headed out of the city and back to Rt. 50.  We will be spending tonight in Union  Missouri.
Tomorrow it's onto Kansas City and beyond.
